Skin Health Starts With Awareness
May is Melanoma Awareness Month, and, at AHH, our Advanced Aesthetics team is taking this opportunity to shine a light on the importance of skin cancer prevention, early detection, and the critical role professional skincare providers can play in supporting long-term skin health.
The Skin You’re In: Why It Matters
Skin is your body’s largest organ — and the most visible. While many people think of advanced aesthetics as purely cosmetic, our work goes far beyond the surface. Every time we perform a facial, assess skin under magnification, or conduct a thorough consultation, we are also screening for signs that may need further medical evaluation. We are trained to notice subtle changes in the skin — texture, tone, pigmentation, and lesions — that might otherwise go overlooked.
Understanding Melanoma
Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, but when caught early, it is highly treatable. Risk factors include UV exposure, tanning beds, a history of sunburns, and genetics. It can appear anywhere on the body — not just sun-exposed areas — and sometimes shows up as a mole that changes in color, shape, or size.
That’s why early detection is key, and why we encourage every client to:
- Perform monthly self-skin checks
- See a dermatologist annually (or more often if high-risk)
- Use daily SPF (even on cloudy days or while indoors)
- Ask us questions if you notice something new or changing
Our Role as Aesthetics Providers
While aestheticians cannot diagnose skin cancer, we can often be the first to spot something unusual. In our practice, we prioritize client education and holistic care, so if we see a suspicious lesion, we will always recommend a medical follow-up.
We also guide clients toward sun-safe practices, offering product recommendations that include broad-spectrum SPF (such as Colorescience’s Sunforgettable® Total Protection® Face Shield Flex SPF 50), antioxidant-rich serums, and post-sun recovery treatments. Skin health is a lifelong journey, and we’re honored to walk that path with you.
What You Can Do This Month
This May, we invite you to take these simple steps in honor of Melanoma Awareness Month:
- Book a professional skin consultation with one of our licensed providers
- Check your sunscreen’s expiration date and upgrade to a high-quality daily SPF
- Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses when outdoors
- Talk to your loved ones about the importance of regular skin checks
